00:00:05.759 --> 00:00:12.080
Hello everybody, this is Howard Fox, and welcome back for another episode of the Outdoor Adventure Series Podcast.
00:00:12.400 --> 00:00:19.199
I am winding down here on a Friday evening in beautiful Newberry Springs, California.
00:00:19.359 --> 00:00:24.559
I have been interviewing the residents and community leaders all day.
00:00:24.879 --> 00:00:30.559
And really about Newberry Springs, what makes it so special, what makes the people so special.
00:00:30.800 --> 00:00:43.439
And we're also talking a little bit about a very important reason why we're here because Newberry Springs is literally situated right on Route 66, the mother road.
00:00:43.759 --> 00:00:51.280
And it is a couple hundred miles from Santa Monica, the western terminus of Route 66.
00:00:51.439 --> 00:00:54.560
The eastern is in Chicago, my ex hometown.
00:00:54.799 --> 00:01:00.960
But I'm very excited to be here in Newberry Springs because I've gotten to know all these fantastic people.
00:01:01.119 --> 00:01:11.599
And right now I get to introduce a young lady who is involved with the planning committee for Route 66 on behalf of Newberry Springs.
00:01:11.840 --> 00:01:15.680
And I have the pleasure to introduce you to Tan Forbes.
00:01:16.239 --> 00:01:25.359
And she is here in the community, and I'd love for her to share a little bit about herself and what does it take to help be a part of this community?
00:01:25.439 --> 00:01:31.120
And what are some of the activities that you are involved with to celebrate for the Route 66 Centennial?
00:01:31.439 --> 00:01:33.680
Well, I started three years ago.
00:01:33.920 --> 00:01:38.640
Newberry Springs has a really great garden club that's run by Inceda.
00:01:39.120 --> 00:01:44.959
And so when I was invited, I was really excited to meet the people here.
00:01:45.680 --> 00:01:50.959
And just like most people, it's just so open area and the range is amazing.
00:01:51.040 --> 00:01:55.680
And driving through it, I take pictures a lot because of the mountains.
00:01:56.079 --> 00:01:57.359
And it's so amazing.
00:01:57.439 --> 00:02:04.640
And then I've actually was able when we were having a meeting with a garden club to see rams and sheep.
00:02:04.719 --> 00:02:07.680
And it's uh it's wild to even see animals out here.
00:02:07.840 --> 00:02:11.360
So it's very rural, but it's it's very more to nature.
00:02:11.520 --> 00:02:11.840
Okay.
00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:13.439
And what's really nice about it.
00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:14.400
Excellent.
00:02:14.800 --> 00:02:18.400
How long have you been out here in the in in the desert?
00:02:18.639 --> 00:02:23.599
You're in the I guess this would be the eastern edge of San Bernardino County.
00:02:23.840 --> 00:02:29.439
Uh we're right near the Mojave National Preserve, which is a place that's very special for me.
00:02:29.840 --> 00:02:42.159
But coming out here, I mean there's we're kind of like at the intersection of the two major interstates, and tucked away is this beautiful little valley and community.
00:02:42.240 --> 00:02:45.439
And how long have you been a part of of this community?
00:02:45.759 --> 00:02:46.479
Oh my gosh.
00:02:46.639 --> 00:02:48.479
Well, I used to live in Orange County.
00:02:48.639 --> 00:02:48.879
Okay.
00:02:49.280 --> 00:02:52.719
And I had to drive up here for work most of the times.
00:02:52.800 --> 00:02:52.960
Okay.
00:02:53.199 --> 00:02:57.120
And I would go through a lot of different areas, and Newberry Springs was amazing.
00:02:57.199 --> 00:02:58.719
Well, I'd have to go through Barstow.
00:02:58.800 --> 00:02:58.960
Okay.
00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:02.879
And so and the town was just so like tiny.
00:03:03.199 --> 00:03:10.319
Everything was so tiny and the people were so unique because everything was still back in the 60s and 70s.
00:03:10.479 --> 00:03:11.520
I was like floored.
00:03:11.840 --> 00:03:16.240
This is so cool because going back to the past, it was like going back through time.
00:03:16.400 --> 00:03:23.840
And so when I came up to Newberry Springs, I always stopped at the Baghdad Cafe because it was such a bizarre kind of place.
00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:28.879
And so I got a chance to speak to Andrea Pritt and I was doing advertising.
00:03:28.960 --> 00:03:31.199
She goes, Yeah, I was thinking about doing some advertising.
00:03:31.439 --> 00:03:40.800
And so when I stopped there, and I had their hamburger and french fries, and they introduced me to all the people and they asked me if I wanted to hold up a Route 66 sign.
00:03:41.039 --> 00:03:42.080
Really wasn't familiar with it.
00:03:42.159 --> 00:03:43.120
I had to do some research.
00:03:43.439 --> 00:03:43.759
Okay.
00:03:44.159 --> 00:03:49.759
Yeah, I didn't realize that Route 66 came from all the way from San Mardin, all the way to Chicago.
00:03:49.919 --> 00:03:50.159
Right.
00:03:50.400 --> 00:03:53.439
And I really want to make that trip just to see what it's like.
00:03:53.919 --> 00:03:54.960
I've never been through it.
00:03:55.360 --> 00:04:04.639
So, anyways, when I was sitting there, Andrea would say, sit down and just don't mow till 12 because we have all these tourists.
00:04:05.039 --> 00:04:06.080
And I'm like, why?
00:04:06.319 --> 00:04:09.120
I said, Because are you familiar with Baghdad Cafe?
00:04:09.199 --> 00:04:10.719
And I'm like, No, I'm not.
00:04:11.199 --> 00:04:26.399
And so she goes, and then all of a sudden, these four huge buses come in and there's nothing but French people everywhere, and they wanted everything and anything, and they couldn't use the register enough to get this.
00:04:26.480 --> 00:04:28.240
I'm like, oh my god, what is going on?
00:04:28.399 --> 00:04:30.079
And she says, Oh yeah, that was lunch.
00:04:30.399 --> 00:04:34.480
And then they all took off and I go, tell me about this place.
00:04:34.800 --> 00:04:36.560
And she says, Oh, you gotta watch the movie.
00:04:36.639 --> 00:04:44.160
So I had to sit and watch the movie with Jack Pallet, and I was like, Oh my gosh, it's such a great like little movie.
00:04:44.480 --> 00:04:49.439
It's kind of like now you think it's really corny, but it was really interesting.
00:04:49.680 --> 00:04:56.800
The music was amazing, and I found out that it won a nominated actually for an academy for the best original song.
00:04:57.279 --> 00:05:02.560
So I was really thrilled to even know that hey, we have a kind of like a famous area.
00:05:02.959 --> 00:05:06.879
And then I came to the barn and I remember the barn.
00:05:06.959 --> 00:05:21.759
It wasn't as fancy as anything else either, but then after a while it just kept getting better, and it's amazing how this place has developed and and it gets richer every time I come through here because I'm part of the garden club.
00:05:22.399 --> 00:05:28.959
And getting to know all the people that live here just touches my heart because I said, I'm gonna be part of the chamber.
00:05:29.199 --> 00:05:34.959
So I signed up for the chamber and then they pulled me in to do this aesthetics for them.
00:05:35.120 --> 00:05:39.199
And so I'm like, I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna make this happen for them, right?
00:05:39.279 --> 00:05:43.120
And then they said, Oh, we're having that 100-year anniversary of Route 66.
00:05:43.439 --> 00:05:47.439
And I'm like, I didn't even know it was a hundred years already.
00:05:47.759 --> 00:05:50.720
So I said, This ought to be really interesting.
00:05:51.199 --> 00:05:55.360
So, and you can see how excited the town is, right?
00:05:55.600 --> 00:06:00.160
Even though I feel like a lot of people don't know about Route 66.
00:06:00.480 --> 00:06:05.680
This is where all the history of the train we can hear the train right now.
00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:06.319
Exactly.
00:06:06.639 --> 00:06:07.439
I love that sound bottle.
00:06:07.759 --> 00:06:08.319
Yeah, yeah.
00:06:08.480 --> 00:06:12.639
And it's amazing how you can go through it and it becomes nostalgia to you.
00:06:12.800 --> 00:06:22.240
Some people will remember picking up bottles, like they look at it, like you could go through this town and there'll be like old bottles, and like, wait a minute, this is not a regular Coke bottle.
00:06:22.399 --> 00:06:23.519
This is an antique bottle.
00:06:23.759 --> 00:06:24.959
This antique classic Coke.
00:06:25.120 --> 00:06:29.120
Yeah, you're like, okay, should I put it on eBay or should I just keep it?
00:06:29.920 --> 00:06:32.879
So but it it is an amazing town for sure.
00:06:33.199 --> 00:06:53.040
And so this activity of the aesthetics, what are some of the highlights that you are hoping to to share with the the visitors that are gonna be coming through this this year and experiencing Newbury Springs, the barn, the Baghdad Cafe, and just being on Route 66.
00:06:53.439 --> 00:06:58.079
What are some of those aesthetic elements that you're work working on or if you can share that?
00:06:58.560 --> 00:07:02.240
Well, my favorite movie, just to let you know, is Back to the Future.
00:07:02.639 --> 00:07:03.600
Love that movie.
00:07:04.240 --> 00:07:13.680
And when you come through here, I want to give that same feel when you step through time with the car shows, because I've been to Route 66 car show before.
00:07:13.759 --> 00:07:14.480
It's amazing.
00:07:25.519 --> 00:07:36.079
So when you when we enter in to what we're trying to do is to enter into the car show, and then you enter a little bit in and you see the the railroads that we built.
00:07:36.319 --> 00:07:40.319
And then you enter a little bit farther and you see the horses, and you go, Oh yeah, I see.
00:07:40.480 --> 00:07:41.360
I see how that is.
00:07:41.439 --> 00:07:42.399
That's part of America.
00:07:42.560 --> 00:07:42.720
Right.
00:07:42.879 --> 00:07:47.279
That's part of what we have, and we want to hold on to it as much as we can.
00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:51.759
So it is it's safe to say you're having hard work.
00:07:52.240 --> 00:08:03.040
I mean it putting on an event of this magnitude is not for the faint of heart, but it sounds like this is this is really uh feeding your soul, so to speak.
00:08:03.439 --> 00:08:04.079
Well, yes.
00:08:04.240 --> 00:08:10.800
They told me it's gonna take six months to really do this project, but we're gonna try to do it in two months.
00:08:11.040 --> 00:08:11.600
Oh boy.
00:08:11.759 --> 00:08:13.199
So we'll see how that works.
00:08:14.079 --> 00:08:15.600
Are you a taskmaster?
00:08:15.920 --> 00:08:17.199
I am, I really am.
00:08:17.759 --> 00:08:20.240
Yeah, the first thing I do when I get up is make my bed.
00:08:20.720 --> 00:08:20.959
Sure.
00:08:21.120 --> 00:08:23.439
I make coffee and sit outside, that's my first thing.
00:08:23.680 --> 00:08:24.959
Oh everything comes after that.
00:08:25.199 --> 00:08:25.920
That's the second thing.
00:08:26.160 --> 00:08:26.959
Okay, gotcha.
00:08:27.199 --> 00:08:45.039
Well, listen, I appreciate you taking the time to chat a little bit about you and your background and your role here in in this the centennial celebration for Route 66 and really helping as our others putting Newberry Springs firmly on the map as a must-visit destination.
00:08:45.200 --> 00:08:48.080
So thank you so much for spending time with us today.
00:08:48.320 --> 00:08:55.360
Yes, and one more thing I want to tell your your your podcaster listeners is to definitely watch that movie.
00:08:55.519 --> 00:08:57.919
It shows you a lot about Newberry Springs.
00:08:58.000 --> 00:08:59.519
It's such it's so nostalgic.
00:08:59.840 --> 00:09:11.600
When I was introduced to Carla, I actually I'd seen the YouTube video with Wonder Hussie, and you probably have seen that too, and the the marriage ceremonies back here.
00:09:11.919 --> 00:09:16.639
And when I met Carla, she said, You have have you seen Baghdad Cafe?
00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:17.600
And I knew of it.
00:09:17.759 --> 00:09:26.879
I even knew there was a Baghdad Cafe, but I never had never watched the movie, and so once I did it, it's like I get it, I can't wait to be here.
00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:27.919
Absolutely.
00:09:28.080 --> 00:09:33.600
It is wonderful, and we are gonna have that backlinks and all of the episodes in our show notes.
00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:42.080
Hopefully, folks will see that movie and want to come out here and visit Newbury Springs and just to celebrate we're 66 here as well.
00:09:42.480 --> 00:09:43.039
Thank you.
